History, prejudice, and the study of social inequities.Jules P. Harrell & Edna Greene Medford - 2012 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 35 (6):433-434.
Integrating a historical perspective into studies of prejudicial attitudes facilitates the interpretation of paradoxical findings of the kind cited in the target article. History also encourages research to move beyond the study of prejudice and to consider institutional and structural forces that maintain social inequities. Multilevel approaches can study these factors in both field and laboratory studies.

Are Girls Good and Boys Bad for Parental Longevity?C. Janna Harrell, Ken R. Smith & Geraldine P. Mineau - 2008 - Human Nature 19 (1):56-69.
Using historical data from the Utah Population Database, this analysis finds significant, consistent, but small adverse mortality effects for mothers after age 50 who had mostly sons. Examination of age-dependent effects indicates that this association increases with mother’s age. Additionally, mothers who had mostly daughters faced mortality risks that increased with age. Offspring sex composition did not have a significant effect on paternal mortality. Interaction analyses were conducted to examine the effect of offspring sex composition with regard to historical period, (...)

SummaryA sentence p is (...)

  11. A contribution to problems of contemporary moral discourse and the idea of personality.P. Floss - 2002 - Filozofia 57 (8):536-540.
The author examines the postmodern conception of individuality, presented by Jules Lipovetsky, as contrasted with the thomistic concept od person. He shows, that with the loss of the conviction, that the human person deserves dignity, the future of the democracy in the civil state as well as the civilization itself would be seriously endangered.

17 essays discussing the role of language in the history of western thought. Since Adam before the Fall named the animals by true insight into their essences, language has never ceased to be the pivot of efforts to understand human nature and our capacity to feel at home in the twin worlds of nature and society. This volume brings together seventeen essays that have appeared in the Journal of the History of Ideasover the last thirty years. Their common theme is (...)

We analyse the extent of possible computations following Hogarth ([2004]) conducted in Malament–Hogarth (MH) spacetimes, and Etesi and Németi ([2002]) in the special subclass containing rotating Kerr black holes. Hogarth ([1994]) had shown that any arithmetic statement could be resolved in a suitable MH spacetime. Etesi and Németi ([2002]) had shown that some relations on natural numbers that are neither universal nor co-universal, can be decided in Kerr spacetimes, and had asked specifically as to the extent of computational limits there. The Limits of the Formal Treatment of Language. Within the philosophy of language, there is a distinction between the natural language philosophers and the ideal language philosophers. The distinction is drawn based on the way these philosophers reflect on language and the world. Natural language philosophers stress the context-based feature of meaning, while the ideal language philosophers emphasize the context-free feature of meaning. In my study I want to show that that even within the formal study of language, in the (...)

One of the problems that interested Rychynskyy the most was the question of the role of the national moment in religious life, of the relation between national and religious. This issue was considered in one way or another in a number of his works, including "On the Manovtsi", "Problems of Ukrainian Religious Consciousness" and others. Researchers, in particular, A. Kolodny, O. Sagan, L. Kondratyk, P. Yarotsky, have paid attention to this question, analyzing A.Richinsky's creativity. The first factor is the Orthodox (...)

How Successful Is Nation-State?[author unknown] - unknown
We have been witnessing more than two hundred years of successful formation and spread of the nation-state. As a historical reminder, let me quote great French historian of the nineteenth century, Jules Michelet; in spite of its somewhat sentimental tone, his view on the unification of France is typical of what any nationalist would like to say about the successful creation of an ethno-national state: "This unification of France, this destruction of parochial spirit is often considered as the simple (...)

This work considers the future of driving in terms of both its short- and long-term horizons. It conjectures that human-controlled driving will follow in the footsteps of a wide swath of other, now either residual or abandoned human occupations. Pursuits that have preceded it into oblivion. In this way, driving will dwindle down into only a few niche locales wherein enthusiasts will still persist, much in the way that steam train hobbyists now continue their own aspirational inclinations. Of course, the (...)
